Austria - Salzburg

Most famously the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg dates back to the 7th century when it was founded as a monastery. It subsequently grew to great importance, being a centre for the Catholic religion and dubbed „the Rome of the North“ during the long periods of the Holy Roman Empire and many learned and then wealthy people impressed the fame of the city.

Nestled between the mountains of Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg and the River Salzach, it is a picturesque city that still reflects the wealth of these past times in an unspoiled showcase. Small alleyways, colorful town houses, rich castles with styled gardens and seemingly endless churches and monasteries.

Salzburg still today puts extended effort into keeping its reputation as a centre for the arts and once a year stages the cultural Festival (Salzburger Festspiele), which showcases the classical studies of opera, music and theatre, ranging from classical to contemporary styles.
