Austria - Innsbruck

The Inn valley is a crossroads in the Alps. Throughout history, travelling across the Alps in which every which way has only had two or three possibilities. One of the ways was to go via the crossing point on the river which is now Innsbruck. And as the Roman Empire expanded to the North, this valley was vital for military transportation and the Romans built a fort in the district of what is now Innsbruck.

Innsbruck is the capital of the majestic Tyrol region of the eastern Alps, a region that has proud history and this town was of great importance to the Habsburgs. In the 15th century it was the administrative centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Nowadays, the architecture of that period very much characterizes the cityscape and the Hofburg, the official residence of the Habsburgs which has been a museum since their demise at the end of the First World War.

But by far the best thing about Innsbruck is the timeless fact that it is surrounded by mountains, mountains that are always snow-capped and mountains that make you realize that the life in the city is insignificant to the marvel of nature. And, as throughout the whole Tyrolean, there are plenty of excuses to get up in those mountains and look down on the town or towns that lie below – Skiing and snowboarding in the winter, hiking and biking in the summer.
